I was very fortunate to come across the Active Kampers website and book out Casper – a lovely white 2019 California. As an NHS worker I required a remote office and an opportunity for adventures with the kids. From the initial email, to the pick up  and then the return, I was struck by the amazing service we experienced and seamless transitions. As an individual, Matt is a wealth of knowledge, helpful, and clearly passionate about his vans and the experiences they offer. Such enthusiasm is infectious and we too became passionate about California’s. Due to our experience with Active Kampers, we have just bought our very own Casper (although much older). I can safely say that this would not have happened had our experience been any different. From pick up Matt was flexible, accommodating and gave a very detailed run through of the van whilst utilising Covid safety procedures. Casper was immaculate, the beauty here is you feel as if you driving away a brand new van, which effectively it was. Casper contained all the necessary equipment and the addition of the four bike rack was a no brainer – we needed it. We had a very comfortable nights sleep on it on grandparents driveway – a great way to see and ‘stay’ with family whilst maintaining social distancing! I will be recommending only this company to friends and colleagues. The pleasure of the experience is a credit to both Matt and Petra and the package they offer. “We had the best time in Charlie travelling all round Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. From rain and gales in St Ives to bright sunshine in Worth Matrevers this van was a total joy and kept us dry and cosy every night. It has all you could possibly want and we soon got used to the rearrangement routine of the mornings. Thanks so much Matt for all your help. We hope we leave Charlie as spotless as he was when we got him. We all agree this has been our best holiday ever and the children have really ever and the children have really blossomed during these two weeks of outdoorsy healthy living.”

We thoroughly recommend the campsite on the Isle of Wight – Compton Farm near Freshwater- beautiful downland all around, great mountain biking and you can walk to the beach. We also really liked the New Forest – great cycling and scenery. The campsite – a great river and bridge with rope swings. We are very sad to say goodbye to Bertie and very much hope to rent again. “Bertie took us on a fantastic holiday to the Alps and south of France (and saw a marmotte). Bertie drives really well and we had a very comfortable time. The mosquito window covers meant It wasn’t too hot even when camping in > 30 c in South of France. Mummy loved the wine fridge, daddy loved the electric pop-up roof (and enjoyed showing it off to curious campers). It was so much better than camping in a tent. So easy to pack up and move on. We loved the flexibility afforded by Bertie- oh and a great stereo sound system too. Thank you very much. Would love to hire Bertie again.”

“Hi Matt, we just got back from our European tour and I’ve got to say how glad I am that we decided on taking one of your vehicles. Charlie was the highlight of the whole trip as you really have the best of both worlds when you drive around in it.

I could drive across the motorways as easy as any other car and not have to stick to the slow lane with the trucks and old-fashioned motorhomes, but was just as capable of getting through the inner-city streets of the places we went or along cobbled lanes too (not to mention the hair-pin bends in Switzerland). In some of the cities we visited, we simply parked up next to everybody else, you wouldn’t even know that it was a fully-functioning campervan on the inside.

And speaking of the inside, they have really thought of everything. I felt we really had it all at our fingertips the whole time. And it was so easy to set everything up too, which was great because everywhere we stopped, we were just keen to set up and check out the area or get dinner ready. Ten minutes later job done! Bring out the wine.

We have already started working out our next trip in the winter time and I don’t want to travel in anything else now. I just loved driving it around.

“Just a quick note to let you know that we had a fantastic weekend’s camping in the VW California we hired from you. The van was superbly prepared and we really didn’t have to think of anything. The induction given by Marke was superb, so much so that when we arrived at our campsite at 11.30 we managed to get ready to turn in for the night within a few minutes. The design of the VW California is superb and we were the subject of interest from other owners of more traditional, large and unwieldy (in my opinion) campervans. We decided to go into Weymouth for an afternoon and it took us about 10 minutes to get the van ready for the trip. When we got there we managed to park easily in a car sized space. We went over to Chesil beach and considered overnighting in the car park but decided to head back to base camp as we had to leave early the next morning – maybe next time! Thanks again for what was a memorable trip – I recommend anyone who wants to try camping but does not want to give up the comforts of home try the VW California.”

“We have just come back from a wet and windy festival and the van made all the difference. It really is a triumph of engineering – every conceivable inch used to create a well equipped living space that is practical and comfortable yet contained within a vehicle that is (almost) as agile as a car. The easily assembled awning (supplied with the van) is a great addition and highly recommended. The vehicle itself was new (2k on the clock) and immaculate. Will definitely hire again. Highly recommended.”

“Had a couple of great trips with Active Kampers. Both vans are brand new, fitted out to a high specification and stocked with everything you’ll need for a great holiday. On collection they were spotlessly clean and fully prepared. I’ve never driven a camper before and was a little concerned about having to pilot ‘Charlie’ on a 270 mile… trip to Cornwall but after a few miles soon got used to him. Couldn’t be easier … more like a car to drive and an incredibly relaxing experience. Spent several nights sleeping in the roof space and found it surprisingly comfortable. The (optional) awning/tent was easy to erect and provided additional sleeping and living areas. The van/tent combo would easily accommodate a family.”

“Our trip to Cornwall in Bertie was a first for us novice campervan’ers and what a perfect way it was to “test the water”! Matt introduced us to Bertie with a quick but comprehensive demonstration of all important features and also very kindly provided us with a guidebook to Cornwall, a couple of OS maps and some very useful tips about walks and sightseeing options. We had an effortless drive down to Cornwall and, for the rest of the week, Bertie negotiated the narrow Cornish lanes with consummate ease, especially when it came to reversing in tight places! We also managed to park in car-sized parking spaces that were simply not available to larger vans and caravans. Setting up camp each time we stopped was an absolute breeze – park up, spin the chairs around, put the kettle on and that’s that! Bertie’s living area is cleverly designed and provided us with hearty meals as well as lovely cold beers from the fridge. When it came to sleeping arrangements, we had a choice between the roof top double bed and the double bed provided by the re-arrangement of the rear bench seat. We tried both and each had its merits. We miss Bertie- “I wonder where Bertie is now?” – and will definitely use ActiveKampers again. We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Bertie and ActiveKampers to others.”
